Belgium, Wisconsin, then Port Washington
Elbert W. Allen began making men's shoes by hand in Belgium, Wisconsin, in 1922, under the name Allen-Spiegal Shoe Company. In 1931 he partnered with a salesman, Bill Edmonds, and formed the Allen Edmonds Corporation. The company later moved its headquarters to nearby Port Washington, where its factory still runs. Footwear group Caleres bought Allen Edmonds in December 2016.
Each shoe goes through a 212-step process and can pass through up to 60 workers before it is finished. A pair can be recrafted about four times before it should be retired.
