Heritage & History
Portland Pet Food Company was founded in 2014 by Katie McCarron after her 14-year-old poodle Rosie stopped eating and was given six months to live by her veterinarian. Katie cooked a home meal that Rosie ate, and after researching the pet food industry she rented kitchen space and worked with a veterinary nutritionist and the Oregon State University Food Innovation Center to develop recipes, which she first sold at Portland farmers markets.
The company later became the first to offer a 100% USA-sourced, shelf-stable, microwavable dog meal, expanded into more than 300 retailers including Whole Foods, and received Oregon State University's Family Generational Business Award for manufacturing in Oregon. In 2022 the McCarrons added cat meals after their senior cat Boots was diagnosed with kidney failure.
Made in Portland, Oregon
Portland Pet Food Company states its entire supply chain 'operates within the USA, from farms, to cooking & baking, to your doorsteps,' and describes itself as manufacturing in Oregon, where its meals and biscuits are cooked and baked in human-grade kitchens.
The company says this domestic, family-run production allowed it to keep supplying stores and customers without disruption during nationwide pet food supply chain issues, and it has been recognized as a Top 20 Sustainable Pet Food Company by the Pet Sustainability Coalition.
