Started in a 900-square-foot barn
Sam Golden learned paint making as a partner with his uncle, Leonard Bocour, in Bocour Artist Colors. Their Manhattan shop on 15th Street ground oil colors by hand and was a hangout for artists from the 1930s into the early 1950s.
In June 1980 Sam, his wife Adele, son Mark, daughter-in-law Barbara and partner Chuck Kelly started Golden Artist Colors in a renovated 900-square-foot barn. The company has been fully owned by its employees since October 2021.
Still made where it began
Golden's FAQ gives the place of manufacture as New Berlin, New York. Its history page says "Despite worldwide distribution, GOLDEN product is still created on the grounds of the original barn in New Berlin." The same history refers to the manufacturing site by a Columbus, NY address, and notes that in 2014 the company bought a 45,000-square-foot building at 65 Hale Street in Norwich, NY for warehousing and distribution.
