Lupine Pet traces its origin to a single handmade dog collar that Valerie Jensen stitched for Scott Badger's wolf-hybrid, Blaze. The collar stopped people in their tracks. Badger and the Jensens were running video rental stores in Conway at the time, and as digital distribution eroded that business, they recognized the collar as their exit. They had samples made, sold them off the counter, and formally founded the company in 1990.
The three co-founders brought inspiration from the mountaineering and outdoor gear world — Conway sits at the edge of the White Mountain National Forest, and climbing hardware conventions for bar-tacking and hardware ratings informed how every collar is built. What began as a start-up above a video store has grown into an operation supplying roughly 7,000 independent retailers across all 50 states and more than a dozen countries, with a workforce of more than 60 people, all in the same New Hampshire mountain town.

Every collar, leash, and harness Lupine Pet sells is cut, sewn, and bar-tacked by hand at the company's factory on Lupine Lane in Center Conway. The production floor draws directly from outdoor gear manufacturing traditions: stitching techniques are borrowed from climbing harness construction, and the company partnered with YKK to engineer a custom side-release buckle stronger than any standard plastic hardware on the market.
The factory's most recognizable policy is the 'Even if Chewed' guarantee: any Lupine collar or leash damaged by a dog's chewing is replaced, no questions asked. Lupine has also chosen not to sell through big-box pet retail chains, a deliberate strategy to protect the independent specialty retailers who built the brand's distribution from the start.
