Mountainsmith was founded in 1979 in Golden, Colorado and still headquartered there. Their Heritage line of lumbar packs and select products are made in the USA using CORDURA fabric. However, some products are manufactured in Vietnam and China. The Heritage line (Heritage Black, Heritage Teal) carries explicit USA manufacturing designation. Founded by Patrick Smith as a pioneer of the lumbar pack category. unverifiable: Golden, CO is HQ; Colorado sewing is historical only. Our notes' claim that a 'Heritage line' carries explicit USA manufacturing designation is not supported by the current site ('Heritage Black' is a colorway). Amazon B082YW6QBM has no origin field, Manufacturer Mountainsmith, and is 'Currently unavailable'. Our own record already says some products are made in Vietnam/China. Mountainsmith designs lumbar packs, backpacks and camera bags in Golden, Colorado. Its early packs were sewn in Colorado, but its current products carry no Made in USA statement.
The first lumbar pack patent
Mountainsmith was founded in Golden, Colorado in 1979 and is still headquartered a few miles from where it started. The company says it secured the first patent for a lumbar pack, a hip-carried bag first worked out for backcountry skiing.
Through the 1980s and 1990s its packs were sewn by home sewers across Colorado, with parts carried from the Front Range to Vail Pass and the Western Slope. Later US-made projects were one-offs: a 2014 ski pack line with Icelantic Skis and the 2016 Tyrol, hand-built in Boulder from up-cycled material.
Where packs are made now
Colorado sewing is history. None of the products on Mountainsmith's store says Made in USA, and the Day Lumbar Pack page describes its dobby nylon fabric without naming a country of origin. "Heritage Black" is a colorway, not a US-made line. Some Mountainsmith products are made in Vietnam and China.
If origin matters to you, check the tag on the pack itself before buying.
