Our Research Notes
Mountainsmith was founded in 1979 in Golden, Colorado and still headquartered there. Their Heritage line of lumbar packs and select products are made in the USA using CORDURA fabric. However, some products are manufactured in Vietnam and China. The Heritage line (Heritage Black, Heritage Teal) carries explicit USA manufacturing designation. Mountainsmith was founded in 1979 in Golden, Colorado by Patrick Smith, who created the lumbar pack category — a waist-carried pack that positions the weight of gear over the hips rather than the shoulders. The lumbar pack format was revolutionary for outdoor recreation: it allowed cyclists, trail runners, hikers, and photographers to carry essential gear without the shoulder fatigue of a traditional backpack.
The company remains headquartered in Golden, Colorado, and their Heritage line of lumbar packs is manufactured in the USA using CORDURA fabric — the military-specification nylon that became the outdoor industry's standard for durability.
The Tour and Day Heritage Packs
The Tour and Day lumbar packs are Mountainsmith's core products and the ones most closely associated with the brand's outdoor heritage. Both feature dual water bottle holders on the sides of the hip belt — a design feature that makes them particularly popular with cyclists who need quick access to hydration without stopping. The padded hip belt distributes pack weight across the hips efficiently.
The Tour is the larger of the two formats, with more main compartment volume and additional organization pockets appropriate for longer outings. The Day is sized for minimal-carry activities — a phone, a few snacks, a light layer, and hydration. Both packs use CORDURA fabric and compression molded hip belt construction.
An Honest Note on Manufacturing
Mountainsmith's Heritage line is USA-made, but the company also produces other product lines — backpacks, camera bags, trekking poles — that are manufactured in Vietnam and China. The Heritage designation applies specifically to Heritage-labeled lumbar packs, not to every Mountainsmith product.
