Sculpey's origin traces to 1967, when a thermal transfer compound developed for electrical transformers was discovered to be hand-shapeable and oven-hardenable. The lab director at Polyform Products began experimenting, and the company pivoted from industrial compounds to arts and crafts — selling the white clay at street fairs before national retail distribution took hold.
By the mid-1980s Polyform introduced colored clays, and the product line expanded into the full Sculpey family: Original Sculpey for beginners, Sculpey III for color mixing, Premo for professional durability, Super Sculpey for doll makers, Souffle for lightweight texture, and Liquid Sculpey for transfers and glazing.
