Wellness Pet Company was founded in 1997 with a mission to provide pets with food formulated around their natural nutritional needs — high protein, minimal processing, and ingredients that a pet's biology is designed to handle. The company's founders believed that the corn, wheat, and soy-heavy formulas dominating commercial pet food were contributing to chronic health problems in domestic animals, and that a return to protein-forward nutrition would produce healthier pets.

Wellness CORE, the company's grain-free high-protein flagship line, launched in the early 2000s and became one of the most recommended brands in veterinary and holistic pet communities. The brand now encompasses multiple product lines including CORE (grain-free, high-protein), Complete Health (wholesome grains), Simple (limited ingredient), and Bowl Boosters (food toppers).

Wellness Pet Company manufactures products at the Mishawaka, Indiana facility operated by Eagle Pack, as well as other USA production sites. The company is headquartered in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, outside Boston, and maintains strict standards for domestic manufacturing. All products are made in the United States.

Wellness CORE dry dog food formulas are built around turkey, chicken, or salmon as primary protein sources, with no meat by-products, corn, wheat, soy, artificial colors, or artificial preservatives. The kibble is formulated with nutrient-rich whole foods — sweet potatoes, broccoli, kale, and other vegetables — to provide complete nutrition without synthetic supplements as a substitute for real ingredients.
