Pencils, pens and paper are still made in the US by a handful of long-running companies. Musgrave Pencil Company has made pencils in Shelbyville, Tennessee since 1916, though some components, including the cedar slats, come from overseas. Fisher Space Pen makes its pens and refills in Boulder City, Nevada. Rite in the Rain coats and binds its all-weather notebooks in Tacoma, Washington.

For paper, Hammermill copy paper comes from Sylvamo's mills in Eastover, South Carolina and Ticonderoga, New York, and Crane makes cotton stationery in New York's Mohawk Valley. SKILCRAFT products are made by nonprofit agencies that employ people who are blind. Some familiar brands don't make a blanket claim: Elmer's names no glue plant.
