Brunton has made navigation instruments since geologist David W. Brunton patented the pocket transit in 1894, and has built them in Riverton, Wyoming since 1972; locally owned again since 2021, it hand-assembles its transits and TruArc compasses at the Riverton factory.
Heritage & History
Brunton's story starts with a patent rather than a company: in 1894 Canadian-born mining engineer David W. Brunton designed a surveying compass small enough to fit in a vest pocket and licensed it to Denver watchmaker William Ainsworth, who built the first units. The pocket transit became standard field equipment for geologists, surveyors and the military. In 1972 a group of Riverton, Wyoming businessmen bought the rights and formed Brunton, Inc., moving production to Wyoming.
Over the next decades the brand passed through Sweden's Silva (1996), Finland's Fiskars (2006) and Sweden's Fenix Outdoor (2009), and some lines were built in China before production was brought back to Riverton from around 2010. In 2021 Lauren and David Heerschap, inventors of the Axis Transit and long-time manufacturing partners, bought the company, making it a locally owned Wyoming business again.
