About Corelle
Introduced in 1970 by Corning Glass Works, Corelle dinnerware is made from Vitrelle — a proprietary three-layer glass laminate — at a manufacturing facility in Corning, New York.
Heritage & History
Corelle arrived in American kitchens in 1970 as a product of Corning Glass Works. The dinnerware was built around Vitrelle, a patented three-layer glass laminate developed by Corning scientists in the late 1960s. Two thin layers of clear glass sandwich a thicker opaque white core, creating a plate that is lighter than ceramic yet far more resistant to chips and everyday breakage. Corelle quickly sold out across the United States throughout the 1970s.
Corning Glass Works spun off its consumer products division in 1998, and the business operated as World Kitchen before being renamed Corelle Brands in 2018. After a merger with Instant Brands ended in bankruptcy in 2023, Centre Lane Partners acquired the dinnerware assets and re-established Corelle Brands under Anchor Hocking ownership in 2024.
Made in Corning, New York
Corelle's Vitrelle glass plates and bowls are manufactured at the company's facility in Corning, New York — the same Steuben County city where Corning Glass Works originated and where the Vitrelle technology was first developed. In 2018, Corelle Brands announced a $50 million modernization investment at the Corning facility, renovating furnaces and retaining approximately 515 jobs.
The Corning plant produces dinnerware distributed to retailers across the United States and internationally. The domestic operation covers Corelle's signature plates and bowls; mugs and stoneware items in some sets are sourced internationally. The Vitrelle process remains a proprietary technology tied to the Corning facility and represents one of the more technically distinctive domestic glass manufacturing operations still running in the United States.
