About Weber
Weber has been America's best-known grill brand since 1952, when Chicago metalworker George Stephen Sr. cut a metal harbor buoy in half and invented the iconic kettle grill. Every Weber kettle grill is still manufactured at the company's Palatine and Huntley, Illinois facilities.
Heritage & History
Weber's origin story is one of American ingenuity at its most literal. In 1952, George Stephen Sr. was working at Mt. Prospect Sheet Metal in the Chicago suburbs when he grew frustrated with the flat, open braziers that were the standard backyard grill of the era. Wind, rain, and uneven heat made outdoor cooking unreliable. His solution was to weld legs onto the bottom half of a metal spherical buoy and add a domed lid from the top half, creating a contained cooking environment that controlled airflow and retained heat.
That first kettle grill set the template for everything Weber has built since. George refined the design with his trademark one-touch cleaning system — a set of three blades that sweep ash through the bottom vent into a removable catcher — and founded Weber-Stephen Products Company. The design was so effective that it remains functionally unchanged more than 70 years later. Weber later expanded into gas and pellet grills, but the original charcoal kettle remains the brand's most recognizable product and a symbol of American backyard culture.
Made in Palatine, Illinois
Weber's manufacturing has been anchored in the Chicago suburbs since the company's founding. The Palatine, Illinois facility — located in the northwest suburbs where George Stephen first developed the kettle grill — has served as the heart of Weber production for decades. A second Illinois plant in Huntley handles additional manufacturing capacity, keeping the majority of Weber's core charcoal grill production on American soil.
The Illinois facilities produce Weber's flagship charcoal kettle grills using heavy-gauge porcelain-enameled steel that resists rust and retains heat evenly. Weber controls quality from raw steel fabrication through final assembly, a level of vertical integration that has allowed the company to maintain consistent tolerances across millions of grills. While Weber sources some components and produces certain product lines internationally, the classic kettle grill — the one George Stephen invented on the factory floor — continues to be made in Illinois, connecting every backyard cookout back to that original Chicago-area workshop.
