Audeze was founded in 2009 in Southern California by a team of engineers who developed a new approach to headphone driver technology: ultra-thin planar magnetic membranes that move air across their entire surface rather than with a cone driven at a single point. The result is lower distortion, faster transient response, and more accurate sound reproduction than conventional dynamic drivers — qualities that audiophiles and professional mixing engineers value for critical listening.

Every Audeze driver is made in their Santa Ana, California factory. The manufacturing process involves applying conductive trace patterns to ultra-thin Uniforce diaphragms at microscopic precision tolerances, assembling the drivers into machined aluminum or magnesium housings, and calibrating each headphone's frequency response individually before packaging. There is no outsourced production.

The LCD Series

Audeze's LCD series — LCD-2, LCD-X, LCD-XC, LCD-4 — represents the range from entry-level audiophile to reference-grade professional monitoring. The LCD-2 Classic is the most accessible entry point: open-back construction, planar magnetic drivers, and the suspension headband that Audeze developed to distribute the weight of their heavier drivers more comfortably than traditional headbands.

The LCD-X and LCD-XC share the same driver architecture but differ in acoustic design: the LCD-X is open-back (sound leaks in and out, but soundstage is more natural) while the LCD-XC is closed-back (isolation from external noise, better for loud environments). Both are used extensively in professional recording studios because the planar magnetic technology's low distortion character is useful for mixing decisions.

The LCD-4 is Audeze's reference flagship — the highest expression of the company's California engineering with hand-selected drivers, ebony wood ear cups, and individual calibration documentation.

Audeze headphones occupy a distinctive position in the headphone market: too expensive and too specialized for casual use, but priced below the most extreme audiophile equipment that sells for five figures.
