American-Made Finds
One maker's story, the brands newly listed here, and a few US-made picks, every Thursday.
Badger was founded in 1995 and makes the products listed here in Gilsum, NH. The site lists 22 verified American-made Badger products.
Nearly everything is made in Gilsum
Badger says it makes "nearly all of our products in our own beautiful facility in rural NH." The company built that plant in Gilsum in 2011, in the town where the founding family has lived since the 1970s, and says it is powered entirely by solar energy. Formulating, filling and testing happen there.
In 2017 the Gilsum plant became an FDA registered drug manufacturing facility, which let Badger make its zinc oxide sunscreens in-house. The balms, lip balms, face oils, aromatherapy sticks and bug balm are Gilsum products too.
The exceptions are listed in Badger's own FAQ: aloe, shave soap, shampoo bars, baby washes and some sunscreens are "manufactured at our subcontractors' facilities." Badger does not say where those subcontractors are. If you want a Gilsum-made product, the balms are the surest pick.
A carpenter's cracked hands
Bill Whyte was working as a carpenter in the mid-1990s when New England winters left his hands split. He mixed beeswax and olive oil into a balm, wanted to call it Bear Paw, found the name taken, and settled on Badger. In 1995 he and Katie Schwerin began hand-filling tins in their kitchen and selling them to hardware stores out of his work van.
Badger is still family owned. Their daughters, Emily Schwerin-Whyte and Rebecca Hamilton, now run it as co-CEOs. The company incorporated as a New Hampshire benefit corporation in 2015 after lobbying for the state law that allowed it.
