Verification Notes

Badger Company manufactures all balms, sunscreens, and personal care products in Gilsum, New Hampshire. Founded 1995, family-owned and operated. All products made in New Hampshire using organic ingredients. USDA Certified Organic, certified B Corp. claim-holds: FAQ: 'Products manufactured at our subcontractors' facilities (Aloe, Shave Soap, Shampoo Bar, Baby Washes, and some sunscreens)' - subcontractor location unstated, not evidence of foreign manufacture. Listed hand balm and lip balms are core Gilsum lines. SPF 30 sunscreen cream B00GNS68OA could be one of the subcontracted sunscreens; listing says only 'making mineral baby sunscreens ... in rural New Hampshire since 1995'. Kept; no contradiction. https://badgerbalm.com/pages/manufacturing "Badger is a manufacturer, first and foremost, and we proudly make nearly all of our products in our own beautiful facility in rural NH."

A carpenter's hand balm

In the mid-1990s Bill Whyte was working as a carpenter, and his hands split in the New England winters. He mixed beeswax and olive oil into a balm, wanted to call it Bear Paw, found the name taken, and settled on Badger. The family filled the first tins by hand in their kitchen and Bill sold them to hardware stores from his work van. Badger dates itself to 1995.

The company is still family owned. Bill's daughter Emily Schwerin-Whyte and Rebecca Hamilton now run it as co-CEOs. Badger incorporated as a Benefit Corporation in New Hampshire after lobbying for the state law, and it is a certified B Corp.

The Gilsum factory and the sunscreen line

Badger built its post-and-beam factory in Gilsum in 2011. It formulates in its own lab, tests ingredients and finished goods in-house, and runs the building on solar power. In 2017 it registered as an FDA drug manufacturing facility so it could make sunscreens itself, since sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug.

The hand balms and lip balms are core Gilsum products. Badger says it makes "nearly all" of its products in its own facility, and its FAQ names the exceptions made by subcontractors: aloe, shave soap, shampoo bars, baby washes and some sunscreens. It does not say where the subcontractors are. The baby sunscreen listing says Badger has made mineral baby sunscreen in rural New Hampshire since 1995.
