BEER NUTS traces its roots to 1937, when Arlo Shirk purchased the Caramel Crisp Shop in Bloomington, Illinois, known locally for caramel apples, caramel corn, and redskin peanuts. In 1940, Russell Shirk took over the shop after his brother Arlo's death, and in 1950 began packaging the redskin peanuts for a local liquor store as 'Shirk's Glazed Peanuts.' In 1953, Russell partnered with local potato-chip distributor Eldredge Brewster, and together they renamed the product BEER NUTS, selling it to taverns and bars until it became an established brand across the country.
The company added Cashews in 1972, Almonds in 1978, and Original Bar Mix in 2006, remaining family owned through multiple generations of the Shirk family, including Jim Shirk, who took the company's presidential reins in 1974 after growing up in the business.
