Charles Danner started the company in 1932, making boots for loggers in the Pacific Northwest. Its US production is at a factory in Portland, Oregon. Field Mag, which toured the plant, describes it as a 59,000-square-foot building with more than 200 bootmakers, the largest footwear factory on the West Coast.
Many of the boots built there use stitchdown construction, where the upper is stitched to the midsole and outsole instead of glued. That is what makes them practical to rebuild. Danner runs a Recrafting service in Portland that repairs stitching and hardware and can fit new soles to worn boots, and Field Mag reports it can handle more than 150 Danner models.
