Organic Valley was founded in 1988 by a group of Wisconsin farmers facing a crisis: commodity milk prices had collapsed, and small family dairy operations were failing across the Midwest. Seven farmers in La Farge, Wisconsin formed the Coulee Region Organic Produce Pool — CROPP — and made a decision that would shape American organic agriculture: they would sell organic milk at a premium price, paid directly to farmers, bypassing the commodity market entirely.
The cooperative model was deliberate. Farmers who joined CROPP owned the company and set the milk price, guaranteeing that the premium consumers paid for organic dairy reached the farms that produced it. By the early 1990s, Organic Valley was expanding beyond Wisconsin into neighboring states, and demand for organic dairy was growing faster than supply.
American Cooperative Farming
Organic Valley today includes over 1,700 family farms across 34 states, making it the largest organic cooperative in North America. Every farm must meet the cooperative's own standards — which exceed USDA Organic requirements — including mandatory outdoor access for cows, no synthetic hormones or antibiotics, and feeding practices that support natural grazing behavior.
