Les Ward started a small egg farm in Monroe, New Hampshire after returning from World War II, and his daughter Carol and her husband Gerry eventually took over the operation along with Carol's cousin Pete — giving the brand its distinctive and personal name. For decades, Pete and Gerry's was a small regional New Hampshire farm operation serving local markets.

The transition to organic certification and humane standards came as consumer awareness of factory farming grew in the 1990s and 2000s. Pete and Gerry's became one of the first egg companies to pursue USDA Organic certification and Certified Humane status simultaneously, and the company built a network of small family farms that could meet the same high standards. Rather than operating as a single massive facility, Pete and Gerry's aggregates eggs from dozens of family farms across the Northeast — a model that supports more farm families and maintains genuinely smaller flocks.

Made in New Hampshire and the Northeast

Pete and Gerry's eggs are produced by hens on small certified family farms primarily in New Hampshire and neighboring Northeastern states. Each farm must meet USDA Certified Organic, Certified Humane, and Free Range standards — requirements that specify minimum space per bird, outdoor access requirements, feed standards, and prohibition of antibiotics, hormones, and GMO feed.

The Monroe, New Hampshire headquarters handles aggregation, grading, washing, and packing for the network farms. The Free Range designation means hens have meaningful outdoor access — not merely a door to a small concrete yard. Certified Humane goes further, requiring specific flock density limits and enrichment standards that genuinely distinguish the farms from industrial alternatives.
