Heritage & History
Founder Michael Beech started Raven's Brew in Ketchikan, Alaska, a town with an average of 152 inches of rain a year. Local artist Ray Troll designed the logo, a raven rising from a steaming cup of coffee. In September 1992 the company began roasting in a friend's garage with a few hundred pounds of green coffee and an 8-pound electric fluid-bed roaster, and it sold to a handful of local retailers. After a state health official shut down the garage operation, the roaster moved into a converted fish-industry bunkhouse on the edge of downtown Ketchikan and later to a third Ketchikan site.
The company says it is mainly a wholesale roaster supplying coffee retailers, and it runs a website for coffee drinkers who cannot buy it locally. Its line includes high-caffeine blends such as Deadman's Reach, Three Peckered Billy Goat and Double Dead, plus USDA Organic and Swiss Water Process decaf coffees. All profits from its Skookum-branded products go to Sealaska Heritage Institute's Baby Raven Reads literacy program.

Since 2002 Raven's Brew has run two roasteries, one in Ketchikan and one in Tumwater, Washington, with the Tumwater site roasting coffee for the Lower 48.
