Five handles, ten sockets

In 1920 Joseph Johnson, a Milwaukee engineer, came up with five handles and ten sockets that snapped together interchangeably, sold under the line "Five do the work of Fifty." He and co-worker William Seidemann built two sample sets by hand on weekends and took more than 500 C.O.D. orders, which launched the Snap-on Wrench Company. Snap-on bought an eleven-acre site in Kenosha in 1929 and moved there in 1930. It sells through franchise dealers and has more than 3,400 franchise vans on US roads.

Where the tools are made

Snap-on says it has 15 manufacturing facilities in the US. Milwaukee Magazine reports that hand tools such as sockets, pliers and screwdrivers are made at Snap-on's plant on Milwaukee's Northwest Side, which opened in 1980. Pneumatic drills, impacts, grinders and sanders under the Sioux brand are made in Murphy, North Carolina, which Snap-on says handles everything from raw materials to final assembly.

Brands Snap-on makes overseas

Snap-on owns Bahco and says "the vast majority of Bahco products are manufactured in our own factories located throughout Europe." Bahco is sold as a European brand. Snap-on does not say where its Blue-Point line is made, and the Blue-Point listing we checked had no origin statement, so treat Blue-Point as unconfirmed.
