From a landlord's garage
John Blake left 25 years of engineering work in 2003 to become a landlord and handyman. In February 2008 he built a crude stud finder that, in his words, was easy to use and actually worked. It holds a strong magnet that grabs the screws and nails behind drywall, so it needs no batteries.
The road to market was slow. In 2010 he got a licensing offer from Gorilla Glue, then partnered with a local company to have the tool made overseas. The Chinese manufacturing attempt failed, and he reworked the design on his own. He began selling the renamed StudPoP in December 2013. His company is Easy Street LLC.
Where it is made
Blake's About page ends with one line on origin: "And I am manufacturing it in the USA. As it should be." That is the only statement StudPoP publishes. It does not name the town or shop where the finders are made or say where the magnets come from, and the live listings for the starter kit, three-pack and large-magnet version we carry give no country of origin.
