Broken windows in Fairfield, 1953
In the summer of 1953, 12-year-old David A. Mullany and his friends kept breaking windows playing baseball in a small yard in Fairfield, Connecticut. They switched to perforated plastic golf balls, but throwing curves wore out the boy's arm. His father, David N. Mullany, a former college and semi-pro pitcher who was out of work, started cutting holes in hollow plastic spheres from a nearby Coty cosmetics plant.
He settled on eight oblong slots cut into one half of the ball. In the neighborhood a strikeout was a "whiff," so he dropped the h and called the ball WIFFLE.
Made in Shelton since 1959
The family moved production to Shelton, Connecticut, in 1959, and the company says the ball is still made there. The balls, the yellow bats and the bat-and-ball sets all come from Shelton, and current listings for the balls say Made in USA.
The company is passing from the Mullany family to the Rose family. Its FAQ says WIFFLE will continue to be made in Shelton and that the original ball and bat are not changing.
