About American Greetings
American Greetings has printed greeting cards and social expression products in the United States since 1906, growing from a Cleveland street stall to one of the world's largest greeting card companies while maintaining domestic printing operations.
A Century of American Connection
American Greetings was founded in 1906 in Cleveland, Ohio by Jacob Sapirstein, a Polish immigrant who sold postcards from a horse-drawn wagon. The company grew through the 20th century by understanding that Americans want to mark the moments of their lives — birthdays, graduations, weddings, bereavements — with a physical object that someone selected and sent.
The Westlake, Ohio headquarters has been the company's home for decades. American Greetings went private in 2013 after nearly a century as a publicly traded company, returning control to the Weiss family (descendants of the founder) who have maintained domestic manufacturing as part of the brand's core identity.
American Manufacturing at Scale
American Greetings prints millions of cards annually at US facilities. The scale of production requires significant capital investment in printing presses, paper handling equipment, and quality control systems. Maintaining domestic printing facilities rather than offshoring production represents an ongoing commitment to US manufacturing that the company has sustained through the transition to digital communication.
The card printing operation involves paper selection, color management, finishing treatments (embossing, foil, die-cutting), and envelope coordination across thousands of SKUs. The technical complexity of maintaining quality consistency across this breadth of product is a manufacturing challenge that American Greetings' domestic operations have refined over more than a century.
