About Avet Reels

Avet Reels machines and assembles lever-drag and star-drag saltwater reels at its own factory in Chatsworth, California. Every part except the bearings is made in house.

One factory on Topanga Canyon Place

Avet lists a single address, 9687 Topanga Canyon Place in Chatsworth, California, and its FAQ says the reels are designed, machined and assembled in that factory. Product pages for the MXL and SX Raptor models describe a fully machined aluminum body made in the U.S.A.

The company says every part, including the internals, is made in house with one exception. The bearings are bought from suppliers around Los Angeles, and Avet does not say where those suppliers make them. Repairs are also done only in Chatsworth. Avet says it has no other authorized service centers.

What the series letters mean for a buyer

The range runs from the small SX reels through the MX, JX and LX families to the HX and EX reels used for heavy offshore trolling, plus the T-RX and an MX star-drag model. The MXL, LX and JX reels we list are lever-drag reels with a strike preset: you set the drag once, and sliding the lever back to the strike position returns it to that setting after you have pushed it up or down during a fight.

Avet's FAQ argues that a lever drag wears less than a star drag because it works directly on the spool instead of through the gear train. Raptor models add the MC Cast magnetic cast control, which brakes the spool without touching it and is meant to stop backlash on light baits.
