About Baking Steel

Baking Steel is a pizza and baking steel brand invented in 2012 by Andris Lagsdin, still fabricated at his family's Stoughton Steel Company in Hanover, Massachusetts.

Heritage & History

In 2012, Andris Lagsdin, who had worked in professional kitchens alongside chefs including Todd English, read a line in Nathan Myhrvold's Modernist Cuisine stating that steel conducts heat better than stone. He tested a slab from his father's business, Stoughton Steel Company, in his home oven and found it produced a pizzeria-quality crust, leading him to launch the Baking Steel Original on Kickstarter later that year.

Food writer Kenji Lopez-Alt tested an early Baking Steel and wrote about it on Serious Eats, driving traffic to the campaign and helping launch the product nationally; coverage in Bon Appetit, the Wall Street Journal, and Food & Wine followed in 2013. The company added a Griddle in 2015 and, in 2018, Lagsdin spun Baking Steel off from the family steel business to become its own independent company.

Made in Hanover, Massachusetts

The Baking Steel Original is still fabricated at Stoughton Steel in Hanover, Massachusetts, the same family steel business where the product originated in 2012. The company states, "That slab became the Baking Steel Original. The same one we make today, still fabricated at Stoughton Steel in Hanover, MA."

Although Baking Steel became its own independent company in 2018, it kept its manufacturing rooted in the family steel shop where the idea began, continuing to fabricate its steels in Hanover, MA.
