About Beaverton Foods

Beaverton Foods makes Inglehoffer and Beaver Brand mustards and horseradish at its 80,000-square-foot plant in Hillsboro, Oregon. The family business dates to 1929.

Rose Biggi's basement horseradish

Rose Biggi's family emigrated from Italy in 1910. In 1929, during the Depression, she was selling vegetables, horseradish roots among them, at a Portland farmers market. A grocer began grinding her roots for its deli, but the fumes drove shoppers out, so Rose started grinding them herself in the basement of her farmhouse. She bottled them as R & L Horseradish and traded jars for meat and groceries when stores could not pay.

In 1942 she bought land from the City of Beaverton, and the business became the Beaverton Horseradish Company. Beaver Brand followed in 1950. Her son Geno later renamed the company Beaverton Foods and bought the Inglehoffer brand after first co-packing it. The family still runs it, and Beaverton named a street, Rose Biggi Avenue, for her in 2015.

From Beaverton to Hillsboro

In 1999 the City of Beaverton told the company a new road would run through its plant, including the farmhouse where Rose started. Geno built a new 80,000-square-foot plant in nearby Hillsboro, more than twice the old size, and it opened in 2001.

The Hillsboro plant makes the Beaver Brand, Inglehoffer, Pacific Farms, Red Duck and Tulelake lines. The company's own product pages do not print a per-item origin line or say where each ingredient is grown, so the US-made statement is at the company level. We found no Beaverton Foods statement that any product is made outside the US.
