About Brown Sheep
Brown Sheep Company is a family-owned wool yarn mill in Mitchell, Nebraska, that has spun yarn since 1980 and remains one of the best-known American-made yarn brands among knitters and crocheters.
Heritage & History
Brown Sheep Company began as a family sheep farm in Nebraska's North Platte River valley, purchased by E.W. Brown and passed down to his son Harlan Brown. When lamb and farming prices fell in the mid-1970s, Harlan researched processing wool into yarn, and in January 1980 the first truckloads of used spinning equipment arrived at the farm; by that July 4th he had spun his first ball of yarn.
The company grew through relationships with Navajo weavers and yarn shops nationwide, and in the late 1990s Harlan's daughter Peggy Jo and her husband Robert Wells joined the business, modernizing the mill's equipment and developing an environmentally friendly dye-water recycling system. Their son Andrew and his wife Brittany joined in 2015, continuing the family's ownership into a third generation.
Made in Mitchell, Nebraska
Brown Sheep states plainly that 'our yarns are made in the USA at our Nebraska mill,' where the company spins, dyes, and ships its wool yarns rather than outsourcing production overseas. The mill is located on the family's original farmland in western Nebraska's North Platte River valley.
While the company no longer raises its own sheep, it says it is 'proud to support U.S. wool growers' and purchases the majority of its wool from Colorado and Wyoming, keeping the supply chain for its yarns based in the American West.
