About Channellock

Channellock has been forging its iconic tongue-and-groove pliers in Meadville, Pennsylvania since 1886, and five generations of the DeArment family have kept every pair made in the same small American city where the company began.

Heritage & History

George B. DeArment founded what would become Channellock in 1886, beginning as a blacksmith in Evansburg, Pennsylvania who hand-forged farrier's tools and sold them from the back of a wagon. The business incorporated as the Champion Bolt and Clipper Company and relocated to Meadville in 1904, where it expanded into nippers, pinchers, and open-end wrenches. George's sons Almon and Howard joined as partners in 1911, and in 1923 the company moved to its current South Main Street address under the name Champion-DeArment Tool Company.

The defining moment in the company's history came in 1933, when chief engineer Howard Manning developed the tongue-and-groove, multi-position slip-joint pliers that would make the brand famous. Patent 1,950,362 was issued in 1934, and in 1949 a federal trademark was granted for the name Channellock — a name that had grown so synonymous with the tool type that the DeArments formally renamed the company Channellock, Inc. in 1963 to protect the trademark from becoming generic. Today the company is led by the fifth generation of the DeArment family, with Jonathan DeArment serving as President and COO and William DeArment as CEO and Board Chairman.

Made in Meadville, Pennsylvania

Every Channellock plier is forged, machined, heat-treated, and assembled in Meadville across two facilities totaling more than 260,000 square feet — the result of a 34,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution expansion completed in 2020. The forging process begins with high-carbon North American steel billets that are heated and pressed under massive drop-forge machines, aligning the grain structure of the metal to produce jaws that are stronger than cast alternatives. After forging, trim presses punch away excess steel, milling operations prepare the halves for assembly, and each pair is dipped in the company's signature blue Plastisol coating — liquefied PVC — that has identified Channellock pliers in American toolboxes for decades.

Channellock employs approximately 370 full-time associates in Meadville, making it one of the largest employers in Crawford County. The company manufactures more than 130 different sizes and types of pliers and hand tools, with all non-locking pliers, snips, professional drivers, pry bars, and ratcheting wrenches produced entirely in the United States from domestic steel. President Jon DeArment has described the company's sourcing philosophy as a deliberate hierarchy: make everything possible in Meadville, source alternatives elsewhere in America if necessary, and turn to overseas suppliers only as a last resort.
