About Crayola

Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith of the Binney & Smith Company introduced the first Crayola crayons in 1903, selling a box of eight for five cents. The name was coined by Edwin's wife Alice, combining the French word for chalk (craie) with "oleaginous" — a reference to the paraffin wax that gives crayons their smooth laydown. The Easton, Pennsylvania factory has been the heart of Crayola production ever since.
The original eight colors — black, brown, blue, red, purple, orange, yellow, and green — established the palette that American children have reached for in classrooms and kitchens for over 120 years. The color count has expanded to 120 standard colors since then, each with a name that has become part of American cultural vocabulary: Burnt Sienna, Cerulean, Cornflower Blue.
