About D'Addario

D'Addario is a family-owned maker of musical instrument strings and accessories based in New York. It makes its strings in New York, drawing its own wire and running string-making machines it designed itself.

Heritage & History

D'Addario says it started making strings because players had no reliable, consistent strings to buy. In the 1980s it built its own string-making and testing machines and introduced colored ball ends to cut packaging and make string changes easier. The company also lists Hex Core, NY Steel and Fusion Twist among the technical developments it pioneered.

D'Addario is family-owned. The family holds an annual Family Assembly that has brought together the third, fourth and fifth generations of D'Addarios in America, and the company is led by CEO John D'Addario III. Its foundation has funded music education programs since 1981.

Made in New York

D'Addario says it does all of its string making in one place in New York, including a wire mill it built after it could not buy wire consistent enough. Its own string-making machines are, in its words, now so advanced that much of how they work is kept under wraps, and a test lab double-checks the finished strings.

The company runs the Playback string recycling program with TerraCycle. It also switched from paper packaging to corrosion-inhibiting bags, which it says has saved more than 7 million pounds of paper since 1991.
