About Dan's Whetstone
Dan's Whetstone Company was founded by mining engineer Dan Kirschman near Hot Springs, Arkansas, and has overseen its products from quarry to finish since 1976. It makes natural Arkansas novaculite sharpening stones, files and hones in Pearcy, Arkansas.
Heritage & History
Danny Kirschman earned an Engineer of Mines degree at the Colorado School of Mines and worked as a mining engineer before settling in Hot Springs, Arkansas. There he became fascinated by novaculite, the rock used to make whetstones, and began cutting and finishing stones as a hobby. Customers he met while travelling wanted his stones, so when his employer planned to move him to Houston he stayed in Hot Springs and started his own whetstone business with his family. The company was first built in Royal, Arkansas. After its building burned on June 6, 1984, it was rebuilt just outside Hot Springs.
As the business grew, Dan's added Beverage Buddies sandstone coasters, core-drilled from sandstone boulders. The company now makes nearly 350 natural Arkansas products. It describes itself as an American owned and operated whetstone company, the only complete producer and supplier of all natural Arkansas whetstone grades, including genuine black Arkansas novaculite.

Dan's Whetstone owns more than 500 acres of mineral properties in the Ouachita Mountains near Hot Springs and controls several quarries that supply its grades of novaculite. The company says its reserves will last four or more generations. Dan bought an old poultry house in Pearcy and converted it into a whetstone factory, moving in during spring 2002; the offices followed in fall 2004 to 418 Hilltop Road. Bench stones, pocket stones, shaped files, slip stones and carving tools are cut and finished there in Soft, Hard, True Hard, Black Hard and Translucent grades.
The company says it oversees the whole process from quarry to finished product, that its factory is in Arkansas, and that its products have met the FTC Made in USA standard since the company was founded.
