About Denise Interchangeable Needles

Denise Interchangeable Needles has made interchangeable knitting and crochet needle kits in the USA since the mid-1970s, with current owner Linda Krag continuing the family business she purchased from original creators Lorraine and Bob Linstead in 2002.

Heritage & History

The original Denise interchangeable needle kit was designed and built by husband-and-wife team Lorraine and Bob Linstead starting in the mid-1970s, who built the injection molds, ran the machines, and assembled and sold the kits themselves. In 2002, longtime customer Linda Krag bought the company from the Linsteads, who were then in their mid-80s.

Denise has remained a family business ever since: Linda's daughter Emily has worked alongside her since 2003, and a third generation has since joined. Production continues through a partnership with a machine shop near Waynesboro, Virginia run by Dave Daughtry, who has manufactured the kits domestically for the company for decades.

Made in Virginia

Every part of the Denise interchangeable needle and hook kit is made in the U.S.A., with almost all components manufactured in Virginia by machinist Dave Daughtry near Waynesboro; the plastic case is produced by a manufacturer in Minnesota, since no comparable case-maker remained near their Virginia base.

The company says that although outsourcing to China or India could be cheaper in the short term, it has chosen to keep production local, supporting American machining skills that the company describes as an increasingly rare trade.
