About Evanger's
Evanger's Dog & Cat Food Co. has been the only privately-held, family-owned pet food cannery in the United States since 1935, sourcing ingredients within 50 miles of their Markham, Illinois plant and canning premium wet pet food with unmatched American craftsmanship.
Heritage & History
Evanger's was founded in 1935 in the Chicago suburbs, making it one of America's oldest pet food companies. For over 90 years, the company has remained family-owned and operated — a rare achievement in an industry that has seen enormous consolidation, with most pet food brands now owned by multinational conglomerates or private equity firms.
The family has maintained their commitment to local sourcing, with refrigerated trucks picking up fresh ingredients daily within a 50-mile radius of the Markham, Illinois facility. This hyper-local approach means the turkey, chicken, beef, and other proteins in Evanger's cans are typically processed the same day they are received — a freshness standard that overseas or large-scale domestic competitors cannot match.
Made in Markham, Illinois
The Markham, Illinois cannery is the heart of Evanger's operation and one of the last independent, family-owned pet food canning facilities in the country. All wet pet food products — from the Heritage Classics line to the Organics line — are canned at this facility under conditions that meet FDA food safety standards.
Evanger's Heritage Classics use minimally processed, market-fresh proteins with grain-free, limited-ingredient formulas. The Organics line carries USDA Organic certification for its beef varieties. The company's Grain-Free Chicken Complements use a nutrient-rich broth base alongside single-protein chicken, making them suitable for both dogs and cats. The Whole Dog Journal named Evanger's Best Limited Ingredient Canned Dog Food, reflecting the quality that decades of family ownership and local sourcing deliver.
