About Fender

Fender has been building electric guitars in California since 1946, and its American-made instrument lines — including the Custom Shop, American Professional, and American Ultra series — represent the gold standard of American electric guitar craftsmanship.

Heritage & History

Clarence Leonidas 'Leo' Fender founded the Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing Company in Fullerton, California in 1946. Leo Fender was not a guitar player — he was an electronics repairman with an engineer's mind who recognized that the lap steel and electric guitars of his era were fundamentally flawed instruments. He set out to redesign them from first principles, and in doing so invented the modern solid-body electric guitar.

The Telecaster, introduced in 1950 as the Broadcaster, was the world's first commercially successful solid-body electric guitar. The Stratocaster followed in 1954, introducing the contoured body, three pickups, and vibrato tailpiece that would become defining features of rock music for the next seven decades. Both designs have remained in continuous production, virtually unchanged in fundamental concept, for over 70 years — a record of engineering success unmatched in the history of musical instruments.

Made in Corona, California

Fender's American-made guitars are produced at the company's Corona, California factory and Custom Shop, where skilled craftspeople build instruments to the specifications that made the brand famous. The Custom Shop, established in 1987, employs Master Builders who handcraft guitars one at a time — instruments that can take weeks to complete and sell for prices that reflect the individual attention each one receives.

Fender's American Professional II and American Ultra series are production-line instruments built in Corona to high standards of consistency and quality. These guitars use American-made hardware, domestic tonewoods, and the decades of refinement that the Corona facility has brought to mass-production American instrument making. The guitar strings, picks, and accessories that Fender makes in the USA are built to the same exacting standards as their instruments, ensuring musicians can trust the complete system of American-made Fender products.
