Flowfold was founded in 2011 in Portland, Maine by Devin McSween and Jim Titus, who had the idea of repurposing the ultra-durable fabric used in sailboat racing — specifically the composite sail material used by America's Cup racing teams — into everyday carry products. The material, made from Dyneema (UHMWPE) fibers, is pound-for-pound stronger than steel, nearly weightless, waterproof, and virtually indestructible. Using it to make wallets and bags seemed obvious once the idea existed.
Portland, Maine is a coastal city with strong maritime heritage, making it an appropriate home for a brand that draws directly from sailing technology. Flowfold built its workshop in Portland and began hand-sewing wallets that quickly developed a devoted following among minimalists, travelers, and ultralight backpackers who wanted gear that would last a lifetime without weighing anything.
