Verdict · checked Oct 23, 2026

Mostly yes

Herr's is a family-owned snack maker that has been based in Nottingham, Pennsylvania since 1952, when, according to its own history, the Herrs bought 37 acres and built a new plant there after a fire destroyed their first chip factory. It still runs the Herr's Snack Factory in Nottingham, where visitors can tour the lines, and its history notes a second Nottingham plant added in 2008 for extruded and baked snacks and a potato chip plant bought in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1976.

The exception is outside production. Herr's FAQ answers "Do we use co-manufacturing?" with "Yes, Herr's uses a select few 3rd party co-manufactures," and it does not say which products those are or where they are made. Herr's product pages also do not print a "Made in USA" line, so a given bag or variety pack is most likely, but not certainly, from a Herr's plant.

About Herr's

Herr's makes potato chips, cheese curls, pretzels and popcorn at its plants in Nottingham, Pennsylvania, with a chip plant in Chillicothe, Ohio. It also uses a few outside co-manufacturers it does not name.

A $1,750 chip company and a fire

In 1946 James Stauffer Herr, then 21, bought a small potato chip company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for $1,750. A year later he moved it into a vacated tobacco shed on the family farm. On September 5, 1951, a fire destroyed that chip factory.

The Herrs bought 37 acres in Nottingham and built a 4,500-square-foot plant there in 1952. Barbecue chips followed in 1958. In 1976 the company bought a small chip plant in Chillicothe, Ohio, and over the next several years added cheese curls, popcorn, pretzels, corn and tortilla chips and onion rings. A second Nottingham plant opened in 2008 for extruded and baked snacks. Visitors can still tour the Herr's Snack Factory in Nottingham.

Where a given bag comes from

Most Herr's snacks come out of those company plants. The exception is in the FAQ, which answers "Do we use co-manufacturing?" with "Yes, Herr's uses a select few 3rd party co-manufactures." It does not say which products those are or where they are made.

Herr's product pages and the listings for the Old Bay and Honey BBQ chips and the 40-count snack mix variety pack we carry do not print a "Made in USA" line. A variety pack in particular could include items from an outside maker, so the plant on the bag is the only sure answer.
