His solution was the Klipschorn — a folded horn speaker that uses the corner of a room as part of the acoustic pathway, achieving an efficiency of 105 dB per watt that allowed the low-powered tube amplifiers of the era to fill a room with convincing volume and dynamics.
The Klipschorn design is still in production today, largely unchanged from Klipsch's original 1946 design. The fact that a speaker design created over 75 years ago in a tin shed in Arkansas remains competitive with modern audiophile loudspeakers is a testament to the engineering insight that went into the original. Paul Klipsch was awarded over 20 patents in his lifetime and received honorary doctorates from multiple universities for his contributions to acoustical engineering.
