About Lamson
Lamson has manufactured cutlery and kitchen tools in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts since 1837, producing the ForgedLite chef's knives, offset spatulas, and specialty kitchen tools used by professional chefs and serious home cooks who value American-forged steel.
Heritage & History
Lamson was founded in 1837 in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, as part of the western Massachusetts cutlery tradition that developed along the Deerfield River valley. The Shelburne Falls area was a center of American knife and cutlery manufacturing in the 19th century, powered by the river's falls and supplied by the iron and steel industries of southern New England. Lamson grew from a small forge into a significant American cutlery manufacturer.
The company survived the long decline of American cutlery manufacturing by focusing on quality and craftsmanship. The ForgedLite series, developed with chef input for lightweight precision cutting, represents Lamson's modern expression of its forging heritage. The brand is known in professional cooking circles for producing American-forged knives at prices significantly below the German and Japanese premium brands.
Made in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts
Lamson forges and finishes knives and kitchen tools at the Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts factory. The drop-forging process — pressing heated steel between hardened dies at high tonnage — aligns the steel's grain structure in ways that cast or stamped steel cannot achieve, producing a blade with better edge retention and resilience. The Shelburne Falls facility handles forging, heat treatment, grinding, and handle fitting.
Shelburne Falls is a small village on the Deerfield River in the Berkshire Hills, and the Lamson factory is part of the community's historical identity. The factory has been making American knives for 187 years. For chefs and home cooks who want knives forged in America by a company older than most European knife brands, Lamson's Massachusetts heritage represents the authentic American cutlery tradition.
