About Maglite
Maglite has been machining its aircraft-grade aluminum flashlights in Ontario, California since 1979, and its precision-engineered design set the global standard for professional flashlight performance for decades.
Heritage & History
Anthony Maglica emigrated from Croatia to the United States in 1950 with virtually nothing, eventually establishing a small machine shop in Los Angeles. In 1979 he introduced the Maglite flashlight — a precision-machined aluminum flashlight that was dramatically more durable and reliable than the plastic alternatives then available. Police departments, military units, and emergency services adopted it rapidly, and the Maglite became the definitive professional flashlight.
The design's key innovations were its aircraft-grade aluminum body machined to tight tolerances, its O-ring sealed weather resistance, and its adjustable beam that could shift from spot to flood by rotating the head. These features, now standard expectations for any quality flashlight, were Maglite's original contributions to the category.
Machined in Ontario, California
Every Maglite flashlight is machined at the company's facility in Ontario, California — a manufacturing complex that Anthony Maglica built specifically to house the precision CNC machining equipment required to hold the tolerances his design demanded. The Ontario facility employs hundreds of California workers and has been expanded multiple times as the product line grew.
The aluminum tube bodies are machined from extruded bar stock, with threads cut to engage the lens head and tail cap. The anodized finish is applied to protect the aluminum from corrosion while providing a gripping surface. Every component that contributes to the flashlight's weather resistance — the O-rings, the thread design, the sealed switch — is manufactured or specified in Ontario.
