About Nugget Comfort
Nugget Comfort makes modular children's foam play furniture in Hillsborough, North Carolina, combining certified safe foam with machine-washable covers to create an open-ended play platform that became a cultural phenomenon among families.
The Play Couch Category
Nugget Comfort was founded in 2014 by David Baron and Hannah Withers in Hillsborough, North Carolina, with the deceptively simple idea that children's furniture should be reconfigurable. The Nugget consists of four foam pieces — a base, a back, and two triangular supports — that children can arrange into a sofa, a fort, a slide, a climbing structure, or any configuration their imagination produces.
The product became a cultural sensation during the COVID-19 pandemic, when families with children stuck at home discovered that a single piece of furniture could occupy children for hours. Demand temporarily outpaced supply by such a large margin that Nugget became a resale commodity, with parents paying multiples of retail price to get one before their child's birthday.
North Carolina Made
Nugget's foam is produced in Mount Airy, North Carolina, a short drive from the company's Hillsborough headquarters. The foam carries CertiPUR-US certification, which tests for harmful substances including formaldehyde, PBDE flame retardants, heavy metals, and chlorofluorocarbons. The covers are GREENGUARD Gold certified, meaning they meet strict chemical emission standards for indoor air quality — a relevant consideration for a product that children will press their faces into.
The machine-washable covers are a practical feature that reflects genuine understanding of how children use furniture: spills, art projects, and food all end up on the Nugget. The covers zip off and run through a standard household washing machine, eliminating the spot-cleaning limitations that make most upholstered children's furniture impractical.
