Paramount Coffee Company was established in 1935 by three men in mid-Michigan. The company says it came through the Great Depression, WWII rationing and the energy crises of the 1970s, became an official coffee importer in the 1950s, and introduced Paramount Gourmet Coffee in the 1980s and 1990s.
In 2000 the company moved to employee ownership under an ESOP plan, and it is now 100% employee-owned. Since then it has launched the Joe Knows Coffee line and describes itself as one of the Midwest's largest coffee roasters, serving both home and wholesale customers.
