About Root Candles
Root Candles has made beeswax candles in Medina, Ohio since 1869, when Amos Ives Root founded what became both the world's largest beekeeping supply company and America's most enduring beeswax candle manufacturer.
The Beekeeper Who Made Candles
Amos Ives Root founded The A.I. Root Company in Medina, Ohio in 1869, beginning as a manufacturer of improved beehives that allowed honey harvesting without destroying the colony. Root's innovation made modern beekeeping commercially viable and established the foundation for what would become the world's largest beekeeping supply business.
The natural connection between beekeeping and candle production led Root into beeswax candles early in the company's history. Beeswax, a byproduct of honey production, was a premium candle material long before paraffin (a petroleum derivative) became the dominant commercial candle wax in the late nineteenth century. Root never abandoned beeswax even as paraffin made candle production cheaper, maintaining the natural material standard that has defined the company's candle line for over 150 years.
Natural Beeswax on the Same Land
Every Root candle is made in Medina, Ohio, on the same plot of land that Amos Root purchased in 1869. The continuity of site across more than 150 years is unusual even among American heritage manufacturers; most companies of comparable age have moved facilities multiple times. Root's Medina presence has become a local landmark, and the company is consistently among Medina County's largest employers.
Root candles use a proprietary natural beeswax blend — combining beeswax with other natural waxes to achieve the burn consistency, scent throw, and surface finish properties that the product line requires. The formula uses all-natural cotton wicks without metal cores and pure essential oil fragrances rather than synthetic fragrance compounds. No paraffin, no artificial dyes.
