About See's Candies

See's Candies opened its first shop in Los Angeles in 1921, selling Mary See's recipes. Owned by Berkshire Hathaway, it makes boxed chocolates, truffles, brittles and lollypops at Candy Kitchens in South San Francisco and Los Angeles, California.

Heritage & History

In 1921 Charles See opened the first See's Candies shop in Los Angeles, selling treats made from his mother Mary See's recipes. The company soon had a dozen shops across Los Angeles, expanded to San Francisco and opened a 15,000-square-foot Candy Kitchen there; during World War II it chose to make less candy rather than compromise on ingredients.

Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger's Berkshire Hathaway acquired See's, and the company opened shops beyond California, starting in Phoenix, and later in Hong Kong. It celebrated its centennial in 2021 and today operates about 250 shops across America and the world.

Made in California

See's makes its candy in California Candy Kitchens, including its Los Angeles kitchen and a South San Francisco kitchen, with a separate Burlingame kitchen known as "The Lollypop Guild" dedicated to Lollys and Little Pops. It says it follows timeless recipes with premium ingredients and no preservatives, which gives its candy a limited shelf life.

See's was the first company to deliver liquid chocolate by tanker truck, and its kitchens hand-decorate treats and age chocolate. It recruits production staff to make time-honored sweets with state-of-the-art equipment at its Candy Kitchens.
