About SmartKnitKIDS

Knit-Rite was founded in 1923 in Kansas City, Kansas, by amputee W.E. 'Billy' Isle and his wife Anna, who began knitting prosthetic socks. The company introduced its SmartKnit seamless sock line, including the SmartKnitKIDS children's line, and continues to manufacture medical textiles at its Kansas City headquarters.

Heritage & History

Knit-Rite was founded in 1923 in Kansas City during a time when the country was still recovering from World War I. Founder W.E. 'Billy' Isle, an amputee who lost his foot in a railroad accident, and his wife Anna began knitting stump socks to be worn under prostheses; Anna became the company's first traveling saleswoman. The company survived the Great Depression by moving into its own production facilities and kept a loyal staff of 15 employees through the hardest years.

Ownership passed through the Smith family for decades before a new ownership group under Perry Bacon, and later Mark Smith, expanded Knit-Rite's product lines. The pivotal addition was SmartKnit seamless diabetic and sensitivity socks, later extended into the SmartKnitKIDS children's line, along with the acquisition of Therafirm compression hosiery. In 2021, Knit-Rite was purchased by the Thuasne Group and became the USA headquarters of Thuasne's American operations.

Made in Kansas City, Kansas

Knit-Rite manufactures its medical textiles, including the SmartKnitKIDS seamless sensory sock line, at its Kansas City, Kansas facility at 120 Osage Avenue — the site of the company's current, larger production facility since the late 1990s. The company describes itself as 'proudly Made in the USA,' and the antique knitting machine that started the business in 1923 still sits in the building's lobby as a reminder of its roots.

Knit-Rite says its commitment to domestic manufacturing has endured through a century of ownership and product changes, from stump socks for World War I amputees to today's seamless diabetic, sensory, and compression garments produced for children and adults.
