About Smiling Tree Toys
Smiling Tree Toys handcrafts wooden heirloom toys in a renovated red barn in southwestern Minnesota, using sustainably sourced American hardwoods and organic finishes to produce personalized gifts built to be passed down across generations.
The Story Behind the Brand
Smiling Tree Toys was founded by Justin and Kathleen, parents raising four children on a rural property in southwestern Minnesota who wanted to make wooden toys that reflected their values: sustainable materials, no toxic coatings, and construction quality that would allow the toys to outlast any child's childhood and be passed on to the next generation. The company operates from a renovated red barn on the family's acreage, where the toys are handcrafted start to finish.
The personalization element — name puzzles, birth blocks, monogrammed crates — addresses the specific appeal of heirloom toys for gift buyers. A personalized hardwood block set is a different category of gift than a mass-produced plastic toy: it records the child's name and birth date in durable, beautiful material that parents are likely to keep long after the child has grown. The company's partnership with Trees for the Future plants a tree with every purchase.
Made in Minnesota
Every Smiling Tree Toy is handcrafted in the Minnesota barn workshop using three sustainably sourced American hardwoods: maple, cherry, and walnut. The wood is finished with an organic oil — a penetrating finish that protects the wood without creating a surface coating that could chip or peel into a child's mouth. The organic oil finish is non-toxic at the concentrations used, appropriate for toys handled by infants and toddlers.
The alphabet and birth blocks measure 2.25 inches per side — a size designed for small hands to grip and stack easily while providing enough surface area for clear lettering. The toy crates are built from formaldehyde-free plywood with the same organic oil finish, and the dimensions are engineered to hold the company's standard block sets. All wood is sourced from suppliers who maintain sustainable harvesting practices in American forests.
