Stillman & Birn was founded in 1958 by Philip Birn (1911-2004), a Viennese bookbinder. The original operation was at 270 Lafayette Street in Manhattan's SoHo district, where Birn pioneered the black hardbound sketchbook.
In 2019 Clairefontaine acquired Stillman & Birn. The brand is now distributed in the U.S. exclusively by Exaclair, Inc., a subsidiary of Group Exacompta Clairefontaine, and is known for a sketchbook system that lets artists choose paper weight, shade and surface.
