About Stormy Kromer

Stormy Kromer has been sewing its iconic six-panel cap in Ironwood, Michigan since 1903, keeping every stitch in the Upper Peninsula town where George Kromer first devised his wind-proof railroad hat.

Heritage & History

George "Stormy" Kromer was a semi-professional baseball player turned railroad engineer who had a persistent problem: his baseball cap kept blowing off in the wind while he worked the rails. In 1903 he handed his wife Ida a cap and instructions for improving it, and she returned a six-panel wool cap with a snug earband and a secure fit that no Wisconsin winter could strip away. Word spread among fellow railroaders, and the Kromers began selling the cap commercially.

The cap became a fixture of Midwest working life — worn by loggers, farmers, hunters, and anyone who spent long hours outdoors in cold weather. Jacquart Fabric Products, a longtime Upper Peninsula manufacturer, acquired the Stormy Kromer brand and has stewarded it with full respect for the original design and the original manufacturing home. The cap has changed very little since Ida Kromer's first prototype.

Sewn in Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Every Stormy Kromer cap is sewn at the Jacquart facility in Ironwood, Michigan, in the western Upper Peninsula. Ironwood sits near the Wisconsin border in a region defined by iron mining history, harsh winters, and a deep tradition of skilled trades. The town and the cap are a natural fit — the same climate that demands a hat like the Stormy Kromer is the climate where the hat is made.

The Ironwood sewing operation employs local workers who cut, sew, and finish each cap by hand. The six-panel design, the earband, the interior satin lining, and the wool shell are assembled with care in the same Upper Peninsula community the brand has always called home. Stormy Kromer also produces vests, jackets, and accessories in the Ironwood facility, extending the heritage of Upper Peninsula manufacturing across a full line of cold-weather gear.
