String Swing was founded in 1987 by Paul Thieman, a Wisconsin dairy farmer who designed a guitar wall hanger in 1983. The family-owned company makes guitar and instrument hangers, racks, stands and retail displays in Ontario, Wisconsin.
Heritage & History
In 1983, Paul Thieman and Anne Tainter were running a small dairy farm in Elroy, Wisconsin. Thieman played guitar in a local band and pictured a hanger that would keep his guitar out of its case, within reach and properly supported on the wall. Three years later, short of money, the couple decided to make more hangers to sell. String Swing was founded in 1987, and the company produced the first mass-distributed guitar wall mounts. With help from family and a machinist friend, Thieman first made parts and assembled hangers in his home.
Music retailers became early customers. As slat wall fixtures spread through stores, String Swing began making hangers for that mounting system, which started a back-and-forth with dealers that the company says continues today. The original CC01 Home and Studio Guitar Hanger, which Thieman created in 1983, is still the company's best-selling product. The catalog now covers more than 1,400 stands, hangers and displays for stringed, band and bowed instruments, keyboards, amps, drums and percussion, and String Swing remains family-owned.

When the business outgrew his basement, Thieman sold his farm and moved to Ontario, Wisconsin to build a machine shop. The company describes its products as American made from start to finish in Wisconsin and as completely sourced, produced and manufactured in the USA. Its hardwood blocks are handcrafted by local Amish woodworkers.
String Swing acknowledges that operating a business in America can be expensive, but it says the cost is worth it to keep a hands-on manufacturing facility. The company says owning its production gives it the flexibility and control to create new products, make changes and maintain quality, while it actively supports its local community.
