Swiftwick began as a small Tennessee maker of custom team socks for cycling and running events. In 2008 Mark Cleveland, a Brentwood businessman and endurance mountain biker who had handed the socks out at his own 12-hour race, bought the brand and rebuilt it around one idea: a running sock good enough to end blisters. The company is still based in Brentwood, in Williamson County south of Nashville.
The socks themselves are knitted about 150 miles away at a mill in Cleveland, Tennessee, a fact the founder was already pointing to in 2008 and that local running shops in Cleveland still cite today. Swiftwick says its socks are manufactured in the USA from domestically sourced materials wherever possible; Amazon's import designation for the Aspire line reads "Made in the USA and Imported", the standard label for US-knit socks that use some imported yarn.
200-Needle Construction
Swiftwick's 200-needle knitting is the technical basis for its quality claims. A higher needle count produces a tighter, denser knit that conforms more precisely to the foot, spreads pressure more evenly and manages moisture better than the 80- to 108-needle construction of most socks. The founder compared it to fine Egyptian sheets, and the density is equivalent to a compression sock. Every pair carries a lifetime performance guarantee: wear them out and Swiftwick replaces them.
