Southampton County and the surrounding Tidewater region's sandy loam soil and long growing season produce peanuts of a quality that represents less than 2% of any harvest at the extra-large grade Virginia Diner uses. Virginia Diner's Wakefield facility has roasted peanuts continuously since 1929, surviving the Depression, two World Wars, and waves of commodity competition by maintaining a quality standard that loyal customers return to year after year.
